Thanksgiving Eve... And my world is quiet

Coming home from work, I viewed the bumper to bumper traffic on the freeway. The heat rising from the cars and all the red lights made it look like a living overheated animal. But as I apprached the freeway, on my way to mass transit, it was quiet. No honking horns, no excessively reved engines, no one screaming obsenaties at the vehicle next to them. Just the purr of hundreds of cars lined up bumper to bumper.

I stopped by the store to make sure I had plenty to eat for the weekend, though I'm sure I'll get some leftovers from where ever I end up tomorrow. Inside the store is of course a mad house, couples and families trying to figure out what they need for "turkey day", no one can make up their mind - you go down that aisle, I'll check the other one! Though I'm not in a hurry, I can't get out of there fast enough. Snacks - check. Sweets - check. Beer - check. I'm out and back a the bus stop.

Once again, I see the cars, the trains, others walking, trying to get somewhere. Some people are running so they can make the next train. Some cars are speeding, way too fast for the time of day or neighborhood. But for the most part, the trains and busses and most of the cars I see simply drive by. Even with the the speed demons, it's quite. There's no yelling, no horns honking, no swearing, most people on the street aren't even talking - it's too cold. My bus arrives and there's only two others and the bus driver, we didn't even catch a red light before I reached my stop. He said have a good evening as I exited the bus.

The one block walk is less of the same. A few cars driving to and fro. The corner store seems to be busy, but not any more than usual. My apartment building almost looks abandoned, a light on here and there. It would seem that most of my neighbors have gone elsewhere for the holiday. And I'm inside my sanctuary, the place I call home. Even though I have to work on Thanksgiving, I'll get to enjoy this quiet one more day before the world wakes up again.

Peace to one and all.
